b. ENGLISH CONVERSATION CIRCLE

The English Conversation Circle program offers a safe environment where immigrants and refugees come together and practice their English speaking, writing, and reading.

The Circle takes place once a week with a maximum of 20 to 25 participants. Beneficiaries have to register for the Circle in advance and the Applicant vets the eligible beneficiaries before they can attend the sessions.

The Circle is led by the community engagement worker and approximately 4 to 5 volunteers assist with the Circle as well. Volunteers are vetted by the applicants to ensure that they have had previous experience with ESL speakers before they assist with the conversation circle.

Each week there is a set topic of discussion that encourages beneficiaries to practice the English language on various topics. Beneficiaries are also able to converse on various issues they face with settling in Canada and the barriers that they face.

Referrals to language assessment centres are also carried out to allow our eligible clients to access Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes where they can learn the language more formally.
